Equality & Diversity

A good practical understanding of equality and diversity in action is a core competency for all staff working in Social Care whatever the setting. The necessity to engage successfully with service users and staff from a range of different backgrounds and cultures means that staff have an understanding and confidence in delivering a service that promotes equality of opportunity and can accommodate diversity is essential. This course is designed to give participants a grounding in the theory and practical knowledge to develop and promote equality of opportunity and diversity in their workplace and working practice.

Customer service and TQM (Total Quality Management)

Written communication in care


This course aims to improve the written communication skills of all Health Care staff.

Communication in Care

Communication is the foundation of every day life. What we say, how we say it communicates a multitude of messages. These messages are given and received both consciously and subconsciously. It is only possible to provide the best standard of care if carers can communicate effectively and manage barriers to communication.

Care workers, need to be aware of a range of different ways communication can take place. Individuals communicate through a range of different methods and these can be either verbal or non-verbal.

Our Communication in Care course teaches carers how to effectively communicate with service users and colleagues in a care setting and much more.

 

Mental Capacity Act

(Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable)

 Working properly with people who may lack what is known as, "mental capacity" is expected of health and social care providers.This course is put across in plain language, which makes mental capacity straightforward to understand and work with.

The Mental Capacity Act has been extended to cover all people who have difficulty in making or are unable to make their own decisions, significantly raising the relevance and importance of the Act to all care workers.

This course aims to provide participants with an understanding of the essential components of the Mental

Capacity Act 2005 and to explore their practical applications including:  The principles of the Act -  Mental capacity and the capacity test - Best interests -  Independent Mental Capacity Act Advocate (IMCAs) -Advance decisions and Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) - The new criminal offence.

Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS)

Mental Capacity Act 2005 (fully implemented on 1 October 2007)

 The deprivation of liberty safeguards have been introduced into the Mental Capacity Act 2005 by the Mental Health Act 2007.

The safeguards provide a framework for approving the deprivation of liberty for people who lack the capacity to consent to treatment or care in either a hospital or care home that, in their own best interests, can only be provided in circumstances that amount to a deprivation of liberty.

The safeguards legislation contains detailed requirements about when and how deprivation of liberty may be authorised. It provides for an assessment process that must be undertaken before deprivation of liberty may be authorised and detailed arrangements for renewing and challenging the authorisation of deprivation of liberty.

This course will help all care staff understand their new obligations.

DYSPHAGIA

Finding it difficult to swallow food and drink properly can have a profoundly negative effect on a person’s life. As well as making it difficult to enjoy a normal social activity it can lead to further complications, some of which can be dangerous and potentially fatal.

This course gives an awareness of the condition and also looks at how staff can support people with dysphagia. 

 

EMERGENCEY FIRST AID - CPR and DEFIBRILLATION MACHINE USE

(Emergency First Aid Appointed Person)  

The Emergency First Aid for Appointed Person training course is a Health & Safety Executive recommended course. This is the minimum level of First Aid training for the workplace.

The course aims to increase the confidence in giving first aid and includes dealing with, shock, bleeding, seizures, fractures, sprains, strains, dislocations, cardiac arrest, burns and also CPR (kiss of life) to name a few subject areas. Candidates will also have the opportunity  to perform CPR (kiss of life), be trained in the use of defibrillation machines and apply the recovery position, in a practical hands on exercise.

SOVA Safeguarding vulnerable adults

(Meets Skills for Care common induction standards 5.2.1. - 5.3.1. - 5.4.1. - 5.4.2. - 5.5.1. - 5.5 - 5.5.4)

In order to provide Service Users with the protection they deserve the whole care team need to understand how to recognise and respond to abuse and neglect.  It is particularly important that Carers know how to minimise situations that could lead to abuse, how to recognise the signs of abuse and are clear what steps to take if they suspect a Service User is being abused. This course also discusses what is the definition of abuse, what is consent, who is a vulnerable adult and what are the different types of abuse. Also includes a video presentation.

Dementia Awareness( Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable)

Dementia affects around three-quarters of a million people in the UK and it is estimated that the majority of those over 80 suffer from some form of dementia.  In order to ensure that the highest standard of care is delivered to those with dementia, it is essential that carers have a good understanding of the condition and know how to adapt their skills and adopt strategies to manage individuals with dementia. There are various practical demonstrations to show care staff how the memory can be confused. Also includes a video presentation.

Alcohol Related Dementia

Over the past fifteen years, there has been an alarming rise in the number of older people presenting to services with changes in their memory and behaviour because of their alcohol use, this course will assist in explaning the subject in more depth and ways to work with services users effected within the care setting.

Autism and Learning disabilities awareness

This Autism and Learning Disability awareness training course aims to builds delegates awareness and understanding of these subjects. The course will assist delegates in understanding what it means to have Autism and a learning disability and help guide them on ways of supporting service users with learning disabilities

Asperger's Syndrome Awareness 

 

This course will help develop skills, confidence and knowledge of this sector, helping to add real value to the care of service users and greatly assist in care staffs personal development.

 

Stroke awareness

The stroke awareness course aims to build up a staff understanding of what it means for someone to have a stroke. The course covers ways to help a service user in the care setting during and after a stroke.

Basic Food Hygiene

( Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable)

 This course gives an overview of key issues around food hygiene for those who work in the kitchen or care workers who assist in the preparation and delivery of food to Service Users. The course outlines how carers can contribute to good practice.

Health and Safety Awareness

( Meets Skills for Care common induction standards 3.1.1) ( Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable) 

This course explores the responsibility of the individual care worker and teaches delegates how to minimise risk in the workplace, to themselves, Service Users and others. In addition the course also discusses RIDDOR and COSHH. Also includes a video presentation.

Infection Control Awareness

(Meets Skills for Care common induction standards 3.5.1. - 3.5.2. - 3.5.3.)

Infection control is an essential component of care and if overlooked can lead to terrible consequences.  High profile reporting has made this a topical issue in recent times and service users and their families expect only the highest standards to be in place.  This course discusses how the risk of infection can be minimised effectively. Also includes a video presentation

 

Moving & Handling

( Meets where applicable, QCF assessment criteria and Skills for Care common induction standards 3.2.3.- 3.2.4

This is an all encompassing course which provides the principles of safe moving and handling to all personnel working within a care establishment. Aimed directly at care workers and all other care establishment support staff, It will be of particular interest to nursing, residential and domiciliary care workers as well as office, kitchen and maintenance personnel etc. This course covers all aspects of safe practice including, transfers, use of hoists and, slings and other associated moving and handling equipment and safe handling in the general workplace setting, for those who do not perform caring tasks. The course content includes: Manual Handling Operations Regulations legislation regarding moving and handling, how the back works, common injuries associated with poor handling techniques and factors that contribute to safer handling. This is a practical hands on course where hoists and other handling equipment are used by the candidates to ensure good practices.

 

Fire safety 

(Meets Skills for Care common induction standards 3.3)  

( Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable) 

This course provides participants with a greater awareness and understanding of the threat posed by fire, and is designed to increase confidence in the action to be taken in the case of fire. The course is a real eye opener and staff will receive practical scenario simulation of what can happen in a care home fire situation and the hidden dangers which they may not have considered. Also includes a video presentation.

​Fire Warden/Fire Marshall

This Fire Warden / Fire Marshal training course raises awareness of the dangers associated with fire and the practical steps that can be taken to minimise and control the risks that fire presents. The course covers the main hazards, applicable legislation, risk assessment, risk reduction measures and key responsibilities of the Fire Warden / Fire Marshal including proactive and reactive duties.

Challenging behaviour

(Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable)

Challenging behaviour is a situation most carers have to deal with at some time and this course equips the carer with the knowledge of what triggers challenging behaviours and how to deal with challenging situations. Includes the different challenging behavioural themes and explains how to use a functional analysis in the assessment of challenging behaviour

 

Diabetes Awareness

Discusses type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the reasons why a person becomes a diabetic. Also covers medication and behaviour; explains hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia incidents. 

Risk Assessment 

( Meets Skills for Care common induction standards 1.4.3.) 

( Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable)

 Understand what is a risk within the meaning of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Looks at the definition of, and identification of risk and hazard within the care setting and also service user risk assessment. Also discusses safe systems of work used in the management of risk assessment.

 

 Management of Medication awareness

( Meets Skills for Care common induction standards 3.6.3) 

( Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable

 For staff who are designated to administer medicines. The course provides knowledge for individuals on the safe control, handling and administration of medicines in social and domiciliary care environments and includes:

Legislation and medication - Roles, responsibilities and boundaries - Types of medicine and routes - Safe practice in the administration of medicines and more.

Continence awareness

( Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable)

This course will enable your care staff to have a good understanding of incontinence to assist them in making a difference in a person’s well being. Knowing how to actively promote someone’s continence can make a huge difference to their life. This course will enable candidates to understand the causes, prevention and management of continence issues including the types of Incontinence - Contributing factors to incontinence -Promotion of Continence - Recognising the abnormal - Reporting, recording and monitoring – Catheter care and Skin care.

End of life care

( Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable)

 This course addresses the fears surrounding dying and death and allows candidates to explore their feelings and fears on the subject. The course looks at the psychological physical and spiritual needs of the dying service user. Also includes the Kubler Ross theory on death and dying and a service users legal rights.

Understanding strokes & stroke care

( Meets QCF assessment criteria where applicable)

 Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease. It affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. The brain is an extremely complex organ that controls various body functions. If a stroke occurs and blood flow can't reach the region that controls a particular body function that part of the body won't work, as it should.  This course provides a general understanding of what a stroke is and how we can care for these service users.

Parkinson’s Awareness

The aim of this training session is to raise awareness and a general understanding of the issues associated with Parkinson’s. The session will identify symptoms and causes of Parkinson’s.

 

GDPR

Our GDPR training course is designed to help individuals working in care understand and comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act.
